Refugee children via Department of Education, Dharamsala, Indien (code=TF)

Gonpo Dondup
"Dialogue is stronger than arms"
drawn by Gonpo Dondup,
18 years old.

Needy children from various schools from the Tibetan government in exile; in Tenzingang (Arunachal Pradesch), Ravangla (Sikkim) and Chauntra.
The Central School for Tibetans in Chauntra (District Mandi, Himmachal Pradesh), was founded in 1978 as a day and primary school to obtain a possibility for a good education for the children of poor Tibetan refugee families living in this area. The parents of these children settled in the area of Chauntra after the flight from Tibet, to work there as small farmers.
At the beginning, the school was run with financial assistance from the 'Save the Children's Fund', England. Since the early eighties, the school was taken over by the Department of Education under the Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The middle school was developed in a boarding school, because it was important to provide for a school education for Tibetan children from the remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh as well.
The region in the northeastern part of India, where Tuting is a larger village, is very remote, restricted and economically backward, with no proper transportation facilities, and no modern facilities like electricity, telephone etc. The parents living there are mostly illiterate and have four to six children. The condition of the children coming from this area is in a pitiable stage. Almost all are bare foot and in torn condition. With a special consent of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Department of Education makes a special effort every year in admitting as many children from Tuting area as possible.
A sponsorship is helping in this effort. The yearly amount of a sponsorship is CHF 500.- (ca. € 300.- or US$ 410.-); with this amount a child is given food, clothing, shelter and education.
You can remit the amount to our Sponsorship account in Switzerland and we will take care of the administration and forward the sum to the specified student with no deductions.
If you decide to contribute to the support of a child, please fill out your name and address in our Application Form, check the box "For a refugee child in India" and insert the above-mentioned code in the comments field. Click the submit button and we will contact you promptly and provide you with further information.

Children and elderly Tibetans live in the Jampaling Tibetan Refugee Settlement. The majority of the older Tibetans were freedom fighters in Loe-Mustang, near the Nepalese/Tibetan border. In 1975, the Nepalese government assigned a parcel of land to the refugees. Over the years homes for over 60 families were built. The first school buildings were built in 1981/82 and more than 240 children (between ages 10 and 12) go to school there. A nursing home was founded for elderly Tibetans.
